INTRODUCTION
New York City’s waterfronts have largely been seized by private development, most of the ventures in these areas are private economic interests, that only address public value when there is a direct return on profit. But it’s not too late to bring public space back to the city's waterfront, its tourist, and its local residents. With the constant return of inhabitants to the urban core, public programs are more important than ever. arch out loud has launched a design competition that seeks proposals for a public aquarium and waterfront park, providing communal space for the surrounding city.
On a site that borders the East River and the Eleventh Street Basin in New York City, arch out loud invites both student and professional designers to redefine the aquarium typology, examining its relationship to the urban context and exterior realm.
