Four teams were shortlisted to move on to the next phase of the Nine Elms to Pimlico Bridge Competition. Launched by the London Borough of Wandsworth as part of the Vauxhall Nine Elms Battersea Opportunity Area Planning Framework, multidisciplinary teams worldwide were invited to design a concept for a new pedestrian and cycle bridge across London's River Thames, between the Nine Elms and Pimlico districts.
The 74 entries from Stage 1 brought in an entertaining mix of designs, but the four shortlisted designs are a tamer bunch. The teams are:
- SCHEME 021: Buro Happold Ltd with Marks Barfield Architects, J&L Gibbons Landscape Architects, Gardiner and Theobald
- SCHEME 025: Bystrup Architecture Design and Engineering with Robin Snell & Partners, Sven Ole Hansen ApS, Aarsleff and ÅF Lighting
- SCHEME 047: Ove Arup & Partners Ltd with AL_A, Gross Max, Equals Consulting and Movement Strategies
- SCHEME 080: Ove Arup & Partners Ltd with Hopkins Architects and Grant Associates
Finalists were selected by the competition’s jury panel, which includes: Wandsworth Council leader Ravi Govindia; Lambeth councillor Joanne Simpson; architect Graham Stirk; engineer Henry Bardsley; and chair of Cabe at Design Council Pam Alexander. In addition to rigorous technical evaluations of each proposal, the jury took into consideration the feedback from more than 1,000 people who responded to the Stage One public exhibitions.
In the coming months, each finalist team will further develop their initial ideas into detailed designs. According to the Wandsworth Council, the winning team is expected to be announced in late fall this year. The new bridge would then require planning permission before it could be built.
