Following the success of Bjarke Ingels Group's BIG Maze last summer, the National Building Museum in Washington D.C. commissioned Brooklyn-based Snarkitecture to take the stage in the iconic Great Hall and transform it into a giant indoor BEACH, starting on July 4.
The BEACH is a 10,000 sq.ft installation that'll welcome visitors to "splash" in an "ocean" consisting of nearly 1 million recyclable translucent plastic balls, or relax on beach chairs and under umbrellas on the "shoreline" -- all bedecked in Snarkitecture's signature monochromatic white. No need to change into swimwear!
As part of the Museum's annual Summer Block Party, the exhibition will be open until Labor Day, September 7, 2015. Might as well start making those summer plans now.
Dive into the details below.
"The BEACH will be contained within an enclosure and built out of construction materials such as scaffolding, wooden panels, and perforated mesh, all clad in stark white. Monochromatic beach chairs and umbrellas will sprinkle the 50-foot wide 'shoreline,' and the 'ocean' will culminate in a mirrored wall that creates a seemingly infinite reflected expanse. Visitors are welcome to 'swim' in the ocean, or can spend an afternoon at the 'shore’s' edge reading a good book, play beach-related activities such as paddleball, grab a refreshing drink at the snack bar, or dangle their feet in the ocean off the pier."
The Museum is also planning a snack concession inside the BEACH, to be operated through a partnership with D.C.-based Union Kitchen.
“'We see the commission as an exciting opportunity to creat e an architectural installation that reimagines the qualities and possibilities of material, encourages exploration and interaction with one’s surroundings, and offers an unexpected and memorable landscape for visitors to relax and socialize within,'” said Snarkitecture co-founder Alex Mustonen in a statement.
