RIBA revealed an array of projects as the winners of the 2016 London Awards during a recent ceremony. First launched in 1966, the yearly competition distinguishes some of the area's top-notch design projects in various architectural categories. While winning in the competitive London Awards is already a great honor, they're just the beginning of RIBA's yearlong awards cycle. Now, the London Awards winners will move on to compete in the RIBA National Awards. Once the National Award winners are announced on July 6, they will have a chance at being crowned the next RIBA Stirling Prize winner.
The 2016 London Awards competition began with 181 submitted entries, which were narrowed down to 68 shortlisted projects this past March. Since then, the jury visited and evaluated all the shortlisted projects before deciding on the winners.
Six projects also received extra praise as RIBA London Special Awards recipients. The 19th-century Wilton's Music Hall, which Tim Ronalds Architects recently restored, won the top 2016 London Building of the Year Award and the London Conservation Award.
