The second biennial Mies Crown Hall Americas Prize competition is down to its final stretch! Last week, IIT College of Architecture Dean Wiel Arets and MCHAP Director Dirk Denison announced the seven 2014-2015 cycle finalists during an event held in Mexico City's Museo Tamayo. MCHAP recognizes outstanding architecture projects in the Americas that were completed between January 2014 through December 2015. The jury traveled to each finalist project on a tour, which also includes visits with members of the MCHAP Network of architects, academics, and schools.
Alvaro Siza and Herzog & de Meuron won the first MCHAP in 2014, when the competition was still new. Then this past April, Mexico City-based Productora's Pavilion on the Zocalo won the 2016 MCHAP.emerge award. (MCHAP.emerge is an honorable shout-out to all the hard-working emerging architecture practices in the Americas.)
It looks like the competition could be anyone's game. The MCHAP winner will be announced October 19 during the MCHAP Award Dinner. In addition to the MCHAP Award, the lucky author of the winning project will receive the MCHAP Chair at IIT College of Architecture for the following academic year, and funding of up to US$50,000 to support research and a publication related to the prize's overall ‘Rethinking Metropolis’ theme.
