Interest in building the New Danube Bridge in southern Budapest has been around since the 1980s. Back in 1993, the Budapest Municipal Assembly adopted the decision for the bridge's construction across the Danube River, but it never pulled through due to lack of funds. Now, that vision is revived again in a new design competition to construct the 2x3-lane-wide bridge. Recently, a total of 17 interdisciplinary teams from around the globe were shortlisted to develop proposals.
Those teams include Knight Architects + ARUP, Zaha Hadid Architects + Leonhardt, Andrä und Partner, NEY & Partners, setec tpi and WilkinsonEyre, UNStudio + Buro Happold, and more. You can check out the rest of the shortlist here.
Teams will have until January 2018 to develop their proposals, and the competition results are currently expected to be announced on March 8, 2018. If all goes smoothly this time around, the New Danube Bridge will serve as a main urban artery that will influence urban development plans for the southern parts of Budapest.
