The 2018 cycle of MoMA PS1's Young Architects Program competition is already underway. The yearly competition challenges emerging architectural talent to develop creative proposals for a temporary summer outdoor installation that provides shade, seating, and water, and integrates sustainability techniques that address environmental issues.
Once nominated teams submit their portfolios for review, the jury selects five finalists. In recent years, YAP winners have included CODA / Caroline O'Donnell (2013), The Living / David Benjamin (2014), Andrés Jaque / Office for Political Innovation (2015), Escobedo Soliz Studio (2016), and Jenny E. Sabin (2017).
The finalists who will advance in the competition are:
LeCavalier R+D: Jesse LeCavalier
FreelandBuck: David Freeland and Brennan Buck
OFICINAA: Silvia Benedito+Axel Häusler
BairBalliet: Kelly Bair and Kristy Balliet
Dream the Combine: Jennifer Newsom & Tom Carruthers
Each finalist will submit preliminary proposals, and the winner is expected to be announced in early 2018.
This year's judging panel includes: Glenn D. Lowry, Director of The Museum of Modern Art; Klaus Biesenbach, Director of MoMA PS1; Peter Reed, Senior Deputy Director for Curatorial Affairs; Martino Stierli, The Philip Johnson Chief Curator of Architecture and Design; Barry Bergdoll, Curator of Architecture and Design; Sean Anderson, Associate Curator of Architecture and Design; Jeannette Plaut and Marcelo Sarovic, Directors, CONSTRUCTO (Santiago, Chile); and Pippo Ciorra, Senior Curator, MAXXI Architettura (Rome, Italy).
