In 2016 and 2017, UNStudio had the winning masterplan and architectural design proposals for the upcoming FOUR Frankfurt, a four-tower complex that will replace a former Deutsch Bank site in Frankfurt, Germany. Today, UNStudio teamed up with German practice HPP Architects for the next phase of the project, which is currently slated for a 2023 completion.
Located in the city core, the 16,000 m² site has been inaccessible for the last 45 years, UNStudio writes. Their scheme comprises of four sculptural high-rise towers reaching up to 228 meters, and it will also open up new streets to create a new mixed-use city quarter.
UNStudio shared more details about the project below.
“The new high-rise complex will be integrated into the expanding city structure by incorporating the heritage-listed facades of the Junghofstraße into the design and by making a multi-storey base building the connecting element of the entire site,” UNStudio describes.
According to the competition jury's assessment, “the unique quality of the quarter can be found in its public development and amenity value. The new development will therefore create connected spaces, accessible rooftops, pathways and passages. The existing block on the Junghofstraße will be opened up to strengthen the surrounding pathways and ensure a high level of accessibility. This will create a multi-use, diverse quarter comprising 50 percent office spaces, 30 percent living accommodation (including subsidized housing), in addition to retail spaces, restaurants and hotels.
The choice of programs allows for a smooth transition from Frankfurt’s shopping district to the east of Roßmarkt, to the high-rise office towers clustered around Park Taunusanlage.”
