Vienna-based architecture firm querkraft had the winning proposal for the Austrian Pavilion for Expo 2020 in Dubai, in response to the Expo's overall "Connecting Minds, Creating the Future" theme. Designed as a grid of cones that entices visitors to explore, querkraft's proposal fuses traditional building materials with modern techniques.
The firm shared more details about their design below.

“In a time where huge amounts of information create misleading answers for complex issues, the Austrian Pavilion focuses on the framework of innovations. Instead of giving answers, it concentrates on asking questions. The Austrian Pavilion provides the necessary space to engage in the dialogue about essential topics for a better world and a more empathic life together.
The Austrian Pavilion focuses on the question: ‘How can the given resources be used more thoughtfully and respectfully in the future?’”

“Natural materials convey comfort, and the grid of truncated cones unfolds playful aesthetics of light and shadow” that invite visitors to explore the pavilion, the firm describes. “The carefully engineered arcs invite visitors to rest and contemplate amid the hectic hustle and bustle of the expo.”
