BIG's Copenhagen office, in collaboration with Metaform, has been selected to design Skypark Business Center South, the first visible section of the ambitious Airport City development at Luxembourg Airport (LUX).
The initial phase of the project will offer 10,000 – 15,000 sqm of office space, which eventually could grow up to 40,000 sqm total space and expand the program to include shops, restaurants, childcare facilities, car rental centers, etc.
Airport City hopes to create a reference building for sustainable standards, and the proposed structure will sport a timber frame to drastically reduce its carbon footprint compared to steel and concrete, while also deploying rainwater collecting methods, solar panels, green roofs and terraces, a high-performance facade, and a building geometry that maximizes the use of daylight and limit the need for artificial lighting.
Work on the project is expected to commence in 2019 with completion scheduled for 2021/22.

Talking about sustainability and reducing carbon footprints when designing an Airport City...I hope the irony is not lost on them.
