Jeanne Gang has been honored by the 2022 Créateurs Design Awards as the winner of the Charlotte Perriand Award in recognition of her achievements in designing 2009's breakthrough Aqua Tower in Chicago.
The Studio Gang founder said she “long admired” the social and environmental advocacy of the award’s namesake, adding that the positions she espoused were “in many ways ahead of their time."
“Charlotte Perriand represents someone who fearlessly adopted the advanced tools and techniques of her time, yet deployed them with care and intelligence, finding combinations between the materials, the tools of industry, and traditional craft. She was truly forward-thinking in her desire to use design to improve the quality of life for everyone,” she added.
The French architect and designer is considered by many to be a forerunner of design for well-being, as well as an early champion of the progressive notion that good design improves the quality of life of its users and surrounding communities. The award, therefore, is granted in recognition of the work of a living architect whose efforts toward this end match those of Perriand in terms of their impact on the design of residential structures.
Gang joins last year’s winner David Adjaye as the second recipient of the honor and will be formally presented with the award during a special ceremony held in Paris on January 21st.
"For today’s generations and for those to come, it’s important to me that my architecture feels welcoming and inclusive, and that it brings about a sense of wonder. Through its design and making it should spark the intellect and the senses," Gang said in overview of her career.
"I also want my projects to help people come together as a community, giving them means to interact and build relationships regardless of their background. On a larger scale, I hope my work and life will encourage younger generations to care deeply for our natural world and our relationship with it, and that my practice inspires younger designers to engage the issues they care about, taking action to help all living things thrive."
