'Game of Goose' is a site-specific exhibition by multidisciplinary artist Maayan Elyakim, created specifically for the Neutra VDL House, a National Historic Landmark designed by architect Richard Neutra. Curated by Dan Handel, the exhibition draws inspiration from the historic board game, exploring themes of movement, chance, and shifting mental landscapes, transforming the modernist landmark into an immersive and reflective experience.
This exhibition—Elyakim’s first solo presentation in the United States, following his acclaimed 2022 show at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art—engages intimately with the unique architectural and historical elements of the VDL House. Featuring a range of ephemeral sculptures and site-responsive installations situated throughout the house, Game of Goose unfolds as a journey through architectural and mental spaces, from introspection to outward reflection.
Works on view include Tool Chest, a sculptural cabinet of curiosities; Bookmatch #2, a marbled-paper installation exploring symmetrical illusions; Both Hands, a dual-handed screen print; and Infinial, an aluminum staircase-shaped sculpture situated on the rooftop. Each installation carefully responds to Neutra’s architectural vision, inviting visitors to experience the house as a three-dimensional game board with shifting boundaries, reflections, and interpretations.
