Major Repairs is a pivotal conference that delves into reparative practices within architecture and urban design, particularly in response to the escalating ecological crises. Set against the backdrop of Los Angeles—a city grappling with the repercussions of climate change—the event seeks to challenge entrenched architectural habits that have contributed to environmental degradation. Discussions will focus on transitioning from carbon-intensive material supply chains and individual property development towards sustainable, community-centered models.
The conference will feature a diverse lineup of speakers who will explore topics such as the historical context of fire management, innovative development models, bioregional material inventories, and the application of feminist ethics of care in design. By centering non-extractive architectural perspectives, Major Repairs aims to foster new systems and practices essential for navigating the ecological challenges of the 21st century.
Organized by Jia Yi Gu, Assistant Professor at Harvey Mudd College and co-director of Spinagu, alongside Char Miller, Director of Environmental Analysis and W.M. Keck Professor of Environmental Analysis and History at Pomona College, the conference is presented by the Los Angeles Forum for Architecture and Urban Design. Support is provided by the Harvey Mudd College Innovation Accelerator Seed Grant, with graphic design by Christina Huang.
