Steven Holl: Making Architecture, on view at The Samuel Dorsky Museuman, examines the varied work of one of the world’s foremost architects. This exhibition will reveal Holl’s intricate and distinctive process of making architecture, including his daily practice of watercolor drawing.
Approximately one hundred models, related sketches, and other studies will reveal the process behind nine projects by Holl. Featured projects include the Arts Building at Franklin and Marshall College in Pennsylvania, The Kennedy Center Expansion in Washington D.C., and Maggie’s Cancer Care Center in London.
A selection of digital films, his own writings, and writings about him will be on display to bring his practice into thoughtful focus.
Steven Holl has realized numerous commissions from private houses to major urban projects. Despite the demands of a highly successful office, he has managed to maintain the integrity and quality of his work by resisting corporatization.
The show will highlight the process of making architecture through models, sculpture, and in photographs taken during the actual construction process as the particular qualities of space, light and materials emerge.
The exhibition will be on view at the Dorsky Museum from February 10th to July 15th, and will travel internationally beginning in 2019.
