Cornell University’s Design Tech Chair and Architecture Professor Jenny Sabin has been awarded the 2023 Matthias Rippmann Memorial Prize by DigitalFutures. The annual award is given to “a digital tool, body of research, written text or any other thing that revolutionizes architectural research of the Digital Future.”
According to DigitalFutures, Sabin stands “at the forefront of a new direction for 21st-century architectural practice — one that investigates the intersections of architecture and science and applies insights and theories from biology and mathematics to the design of responsive material structures and ecological spatial interventions for diverse audiences.
Holding the title of Arthur L. and Isabel B. Wiesenberger Professor in Architecture, Sabin also serves as the inaugural Chair of the newly formed Department of Design Tech at the Cornell College of Architecture, Art, and Planning where she established an advanced research degree in Matter Design Computation.
Beyond academia, Sabin leads her own experimental design practice, Jenny Sabin Studio, in Ithaca and leads the Sabin Design Lab at Cornell AAP. Her book, LabStudio: Design Research Between Architecture and Biology with Peter Lloyd Jones, was released in July 2017. That year, Sabin’s project Lumen also won MoMA & MoMA PS1’s Young Architects Program.
