There is nothing that joins mathematics and art more easily than the line. For something that looks so simple, there are plenty of complexities that come with it. In this case, architect and designer Joseph Choma of Design Topology Lab challenges the perception and drawing process of the line with his recent installation "Line 01" at the Promenade Building in Atlanta, Georgia.
The installation will be on display at the fifth floor of the Promenade Building until the end of October. You can also check out our previous features on Joseph Choma right here.

Project description:
"Architect and designer, Joseph Choma of Design Topology Lab, recently completed a new drawing installation, Line 01, on the fifth floor of the Promenade Building in Atlanta, Georgia (1230 Peachtree Street) as part of Southern Fried Supernova. Anne Lambert Tracht of ConsultArt, challenged several artists to rethink the role of art within an office space environment. Joseph took this as an opportunity to continue his spatial drawing inquiry, with a more subtle atmospheric approach."
"The drawing installation, Line 01, took its inspiration from theoretical mathematics, which states that lines do not exist; only points exist. In applied mathematics, a line is used as an approximation of an infinite number of points between two ends. With the long historical lineage of single line drawings, Joseph wondered, how to draw a line that doesn't exist but can still be seen? Using mathematical transformations, a shape was generated with tens of thousands of lines which creased. As the curves inflect across the datum, a horizontal line appears."
"Line 01 was constructed out of white pine wood panels. The wood was first stained black, and then scratched at an average depth of .005". Numerically, the cutting depth along each line undulated up and down. Natural variations in the white pine caused bright highlights to emerge in the foreground, revealing the vibrant wood grain beneath the black stain. After the scratching process was complete, a high powered air compressor was utilized to lift the milled fibers, resulting in a carpet like texture.
Line 01 challenges what it means to draw and perceive a horizontal line."
