More people are living alone now than at any point in human history, yet reported happiness has not increased. A new wave of thinking has taken hold in recent years, with architects integrating the ancient concept of co-living into their designs to counter the growing loneliness in western communities.
Evolving beyond the idea of hippie communes and student dorms, high-quality co-living developments have sprung up in cities all around the world, giving residents access to communal spaces and increasing their interaction with neighbours and the wider community.
The Rome Collective Living Challenge is calling for designs using the co-living concept to offer an alternative to traditional affordable housing in Rome, one of the world’s least affordable cities. Participants are given the freedom to select any hypothetical site in Rome in which to conceive an entirely new way of living, one that experiments with the concept of low-income housing as a collective.
The Rome Collective Living Challenge is open now until April 19, 2019, with winners of the US $6,000 prize to be announced on July 4, 2019.
