The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has announced this year’s Stephen Lawrence Prize winner as Wraxall Yard by Clementine Blakemore Architects.
Located in Dorset, the project reused the ruins of a former dairy barn into a new highly accessible vacation retreat and community center. RIBA says the project "proves that inclusive design is not only a set of standards that need to be met, but something that enhances the experience of space for everyone."
Many of the original elements existing at the site were able to be repurposed in the construction, which included consultations with the Centre for Accessible Environments.
2024 Jury chair Matthew Goldschmied complimented their approach by saying: "Sensitivity and ingenuity are evident in every detail of the transformation of Wraxall Yard. Inclusive and accessible design so often implies special treatment for one group or another, but this project appears to transcend all points of differentiation. The fundamental narrative for all who visit is a warm welcome to a nurturing place where a shared garden protects, comforts, and unites in equal measure. Relentless design consistency has delivered spaces that feel appropriate in scale, form and materiality – all of which are perfectly balanced throughout. For an early-career architect to have devised, managed and delivered such a perfectly balanced project is remarkable and fully deserves the accolades it has already and continues to receive."
The project also made the cut for this year's RIBA Stirling Prize shortlist. Blakemore studied for her master's degree at the Royal College of Art in 2015 after taking part in Auburn University's Rural Studio outreach program. The Stephen Lawrence Prize has been given annually since 1998 to architects practicing in their early careers in honor of the aspiring architect and South London native who was slain in a racially-motivated hate crime in 1993.
